Papua New Guinea

The pastor and church people are cleaning and painting the Sidney Knox Memorial church bright colors so everyone will see the transformation. Women are weeding and planting flowers and bushes in the area behind the long rows of rocks around the church. Women going to and from the hospital and children walking to the Kudjip Elementary School, the first organized by the missionaries, are already stopping and staring. Some are asking, "What is happening?" "Why are you cleaning and painting?"

Haven't you heard? Everyone is preparing for the big celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Church of the Nazarene in Papua New Guinea. People will be walking for days, some going barefoot to save their shoes for the special services. Some will be catching a ride in hot and crowded buses or waving down a truck to hitch a ride to the next village. Others will be coming in cars and vans that have one more person squeezed into the space that you might think is impossible. While those missionaries in far away places on the region and in the US will be flying in to renew acquaintances and join in the activities. Can you imagine the excitement?

Brian Woolery, regional NYI coordinator, is really excited and pleased that the 50th Anniversary materials did not arrive in time to be shipped, and now the 'poor guy' deliver them in person to PNG. He will never forget this experience. Wouldn't it be great if we all "had to deliver" a package and would be able to attend the Celebration!
